Let's take a trip back to July of 2008. So Batman uses his rocket-fire-booster move in his Batmobile, launches himself over a car, and intercepts the Joker's bazooka shot aimed at Harvey Dent's armored van. The Batmobile flips over a few times like a coin, and lands on 'heads'. 'DAMAGE CATASTROPHIC'. Damn, he's out of the game...or is he? Now the real action begins:
Exhibit A: 'SELF DESTRUCT'
So he saved Harvey Dent, and now his mobile is totaled. The tank starts shaking like crazy, the left front wheel starts burning rubber, and before you even have a chance to savor the moment...
Exhibit B: Emergence
...mechanical engineers all over the world instantly find themselves wishing they worked for Lucius Fox. Somehow Christian Bale is seated behind the left wheel, but if you look closely the Batpod frame seems to pass through the nose of the Batmobile. And so does Bale.
Not only that, it turns out the right front wheel of the Batmobile becomes the rear wheel of the motorcycle. Incredible! How does this switcheroo happen? After Wayne and the chassis pass through the hood of the Batmobile a la Kitty in X-Men United, somehow the rear wheel instantly speeds up to the angular velocity of the front wheel. CGI? I think so.
Exhibitd D: Awkward
Batman emerges on a seat elevated above a motorcycle that is still being assembled underneath him. Check out that rear wheel - what we have here is a single-sided swingarm, a la this Ducati Monster:

Exhibit E: In Pursuit
We're almost there. At least the wheels are in line with each other now. The Batmobile fades into the distance before exploding for some reason.
"Dude, you just fucked up your Batmobile."
"Oh, in that case, I'm gonna make it explode. Call Denzel."
All in all, this is a pretty sweet ejection sequence and in my opinion is outranked in coolness by only one other scene - stay tuned...
"Call Denzel."
ReplyDeleteI had always noticed how much they had CGI'ed that shot of the Batpod firing out of the Batmobile. I had never thought to slow it down.
This is brilliant.
By the way, I think you just named the next Batknight movie. "Emergence." Not be confused with anything else, of course.
Sorry, the 3rd installment already a has a name:
